About The Photo Dispatch
A little more inspiration. A little more photography.
I'm David, a Scottish photography enthusiast living in Greater Manchester, and I'm the person behind The Photo Dispatch.
I've loved photography for years. I got my first camera for my 16th birthday (that’s it in the header image!), and I'll still take my camera with me whenever I travel. There's something about being somewhere new that makes you look at the world differently. You notice the details, look for interesting light and find yourself photographing things you might otherwise walk straight past.
But I've often thought: why should that feeling be reserved for when we're away?
At home, it's easy to fall into familiar routines. Your camera stays where you left it, days turn into weeks, and the things around you become part of the background.
I wanted to find a way to bring some of that curiosity back into everyday life. Something that would give me a reason to pick up my camera more often, try new ideas and see familiar surroundings with fresh eyes.
That's where The Photo Dispatch began.
Photography inspiration, delivered by post
The Photo Dispatch is a monthly photography experience designed to inspire you to take more photographs, experiment with new ideas and enjoy the process of looking at the world a little differently.
Each dispatch arrives through your letterbox, bringing a thoughtfully written letter filled with photography ideas, suggestions and practical guidance, alongside a creative mission to explore.
The missions are designed to encourage you to look more closely, try something different and discover photographic possibilities in places you already know. They might lead you to experiment with light, notice overlooked details or approach an everyday subject in a completely new way.
It's not a photography course, and it's not about mastering a particular technique or producing a perfect picture. It's about making a little room for creativity, giving yourself something new to try and enjoying where the process takes you.
And there's something appealing about receiving a physical letter in a world where so much of our inspiration arrives through a screen. It's a small invitation to slow down, get curious and spend some time with your camera.
You don't have to go far to find something worth photographing
I love travelling, and taking photographs is a big part of how I experience somewhere new. But one of the ideas at the heart of The Photo Dispatch is that you don't need to travel to an extraordinary place to take an interesting photograph.
There are photographs waiting to be found on your street, in your garden, on your daily walk or in the familiar places you barely notice any more.
Sometimes, all it takes is a different perspective.
That's what I want The Photo Dispatch to encourage: a more curious way of looking at the world, wherever you happen to be. Not necessarily taking more photographs for the sake of it, but finding more enjoyment in the ones you choose to take.
Made by a photographer who's still learning
I'm an enthusiastic amateur, not a professional photographer with all the answers. I enjoy taking photographs, exploring new ideas and learning along the way.
That's an important part of what The Photo Dispatch is about. You don't need the latest camera, expensive lenses or years of experience to take part. Whether you use a DSLR, a mirrorless camera, a film camera or another camera you enjoy shooting with, the aim is to get you thinking creatively and making photographs in your own way.
There isn't one right answer to a creative mission. You might interpret an idea completely differently from someone else, and that's part of the fun.
I'm creating The Photo Dispatch because I want to make more time for photography myself, and I'd love to help other people do the same.
Something we're building together
For now, The Photo Dispatch is about bringing photography inspiration to your letterbox, one monthly dispatch at a time.
But I'd love it to become something more.
One day, I hope to build a community around The Photo Dispatch, where subscribers can share the photographs they've taken, see how other people have interpreted the same mission and find inspiration in one another's work.
Photography can be a wonderfully personal pursuit, but it can also bring people together. I'd love The Photo Dispatch to encourage both: the pleasure of heading out with your camera and the enjoyment of seeing the world through somebody else's eyes.
It's something I'd like to develop as The Photo Dispatch grows, and I hope you'll be part of that journey.
